Why "exact" conversion factors are not the same as commonly used rounded ones
Several imperial-to-metric conversion factors are defined by international agreement as exact values, not as measured or approximated ones — an inch is defined as precisely 25.4 millimetres, and a pound as precisely 0.45359237 kilograms, both fixed by treaty rather than derived from any physical measurement that could carry uncertainty. Many everyday converters and mental shortcuts use rounded approximations instead — treating an inch as roughly 2.54 cm or a pound as roughly 0.454 kg — which is accurate enough for a casual estimate but introduces a small, compounding error in any calculation involving large numbers or many conversion steps chained together. Using the internationally defined exact factors throughout means a result here matches an official or scientific conversion exactly, rather than drifting from it by a fraction of a percent that grows with the size of the numbers involved.
Why temperature needed a fundamentally different calculation
Every other conversion in this tool is a pure multiplication — multiply by a fixed ratio to move between two units of the same underlying quantity, because both scales share the same zero point (zero metres and zero feet both mean "no length at all"). Celsius and Fahrenheit do not share that property: they each define zero at a different physical temperature, so converting between them requires both a multiplication and an offset — Celsius to Fahrenheit is (°C × 9/5) + 32, not simply a ratio applied on its own. Kelvin adds a third, scientifically motivated zero point at absolute zero, the coldest physically possible temperature, which is why Kelvin has no negative values at all in normal use — there is nothing colder to represent.
Why a single lookup table cannot handle every category the same way
Length, weight, volume, area, speed and digital storage all convert through a straightforward multiplication by a fixed ratio between any two units in the category, which is why a single shared conversion mechanism handles all of them uniformly. Temperature is the one category that needed genuinely different logic built in specifically for its offset-based scales, which is also why it gets its own dedicated conversion path in this tool rather than being forced into the same multiply-by-a-ratio approach every other category uses.
Where "the same unit" quietly means two different things
Several unit names that sound identical or interchangeable actually refer to measurably different quantities depending on which regional or technical convention is in use, which is a common source of conversion errors that have nothing to do with the arithmetic itself being wrong. A US gallon and a UK imperial gallon differ by roughly 20% — 3.785 litres against 4.546 — despite sharing the identical name, which matters enormously for anything from a recipe to a fuel-economy comparison. Digital storage has an equivalent trap: manufacturers and network specifications use the decimal SI definition where 1 KB means exactly 1,000 bytes, while many operating systems display the binary definition where 1 KiB means 1,024 bytes — the reason a drive sold as "1 TB" shows up as roughly 931 GB once plugged in and inspected by an operating system using the binary convention instead.

No. This tool uses the decimal SI definitions, where 1 KB is 1,000 bytes — the convention storage manufacturers and network speeds use. Operating systems often report the binary values (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes), which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GB.
