Why Kelvin is not simply "another Fahrenheit"

Celsius and Fahrenheit are both practical, human-scale temperature systems built around convenient reference points — the freezing and boiling points of water, for Celsius — while Kelvin is instead built around a scientifically meaningful zero: absolute zero, the theoretical point at which atomic motion itself stops entirely, making a negative Kelvin temperature physically meaningless rather than simply unusual. This is precisely why Kelvin has no negative values in ordinary scientific use and why it is the standard unit in physics and chemistry rather than a regional convenience like Celsius or Fahrenheit — its zero point represents something physically absolute rather than an arbitrary, human-chosen reference like the freezing point of water.

Why Fahrenheit still dominates everyday use in a small number of countries

Fahrenheit's finer-grained scale — each degree representing a smaller temperature change than a Celsius degree — was originally intended to make everyday weather reporting feel more precise without needing decimal points, and that habit has persisted strongly in the United States long after most of the rest of the world standardised on Celsius for everyday use. This is exactly the gap that makes Fahrenheit-to-Celsius conversion one of the most frequently needed temperature conversions, whether for reading a US weather forecast, following a US recipe's oven temperature, or interpreting a US-manufactured appliance's temperature settings.

Are these conversion factors exact?

Yes, where an exact definition exists. An inch is defined as exactly 25.4 mm and a pound as exactly 0.45359237 kg by international agreement, and those exact values are used here rather than the rounded ones many converters carry.

Why is temperature handled differently?

Because Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points, so conversion needs an offset as well as a factor — 0°C is 32°F, not 0°F. Everything else in this tool scales linearly through a single base unit.

Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?

No, and the difference is large: a UK imperial gallon is about 4.546 litres against the US gallon's 3.785 — roughly 20% bigger. Both are listed separately, as are US and imperial pints and fluid ounces.

Are KB and KiB the same?

No. This tool uses the decimal SI definitions, where 1 KB is 1,000 bytes — the convention storage manufacturers and network speeds use. Operating systems often report the binary values (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes), which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GB.
