How to unit converter

  1. 1

    Pick a category

Choose length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed or data.

  2. 2

    Enter a value

Type an amount and select the unit it is in.

  3. 3

    Read every equivalent

All other units in that category convert at once — no need to pick a target.

Why length has so many units competing for the same job

The reason length alone spans eight commonly used units — from millimetres up to miles — rather than being satisfied by a single universal unit is a matter of convenient scale as much as regional convention: measuring a room in kilometres or a road trip in millimetres would technically work but would be unwieldy in practice, so different units persist for different typical scales even within one measurement system. This is also exactly where imperial and metric length coexist most visibly day to day — construction and engineering drawings in a given country often default to whichever system that country's trade has historically used, while everyday distances get discussed in whichever unit is locally conventional, and converting between the two is one of the single most frequent unit-conversion needs across both professional and everyday contexts.

Where a single conversion mistake compounds into a real error

A recipe, a woodworking plan, or a shipping specification written in one measurement system and misread in the other is a common and entirely avoidable source of error — a plan calling for 10 centimetres misread as 10 inches is off by a factor of nearly two and a half, not a rounding-scale mistake. Checking a converted measurement against every equivalent unit at once, rather than converting only to the single unit expected, makes an implausible result immediately obvious by comparison to the others rather than silently propagating into a finished project.

Frequently asked questions

Are these conversion factors exact?

Yes, where an exact definition exists. An inch is defined as exactly 25.4 mm and a pound as exactly 0.45359237 kg by international agreement, and those exact values are used here rather than the rounded ones many converters carry.

Why is temperature handled differently?

Because Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points, so conversion needs an offset as well as a factor — 0°C is 32°F, not 0°F. Everything else in this tool scales linearly through a single base unit.

Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?

No, and the difference is large: a UK imperial gallon is about 4.546 litres against the US gallon's 3.785 — roughly 20% bigger. Both are listed separately, as are US and imperial pints and fluid ounces.

Are KB and KiB the same?

No. This tool uses the decimal SI definitions, where 1 KB is 1,000 bytes — the convention storage manufacturers and network speeds use. Operating systems often report the binary values (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes), which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GB.
