What "mid-market rate" actually means
Every currency pair trades on a wholesale market between banks and large financial institutions, and at any moment that market has a best available buy price and a best available sell price — the mid-market rate is simply the midpoint between the two, the rate at which currency changes hands with no markup for profit added on either side. It is the closest thing to an objective, unbiased answer to "what is this money actually worth in another currency right now," which is exactly why it is the number central banks publish and financial journalists quote, rather than any single retail rate.
That midpoint is not, however, the rate an ordinary person is offered when actually exchanging money. A bank, a card network, or an airport currency-exchange counter all quote their own buy and sell prices around that midpoint, wider apart than the wholesale market's spread, and the gap between their rate and the true mid-market rate is where their profit on the transaction comes from. Comparing an actual quoted rate against the mid-market rate this tool shows is the simplest way to see exactly how much margin is being charged on a given exchange.
Why rates update daily instead of continuously
A stock price or a live trading-platform exchange rate changes continuously because it reflects a market that is actively trading in real time, tick by tick, all day. The rates behind this tool work differently: they are the European Central Bank's official daily reference rates, compiled once each business day from a snapshot of the interbank market at a fixed time, then published as that day's official figures. This is a deliberate institutional choice, not a technical limitation — a single daily reference rate gives businesses, accountants and statisticians a stable, citable number to work from, rather than a figure that could be different by the time a transaction settles.
The practical consequence is that this tool's numbers are appropriate for everyday conversions, budgeting and understanding roughly what an amount is worth in another currency, but they are a snapshot from earlier that business day rather than a live feed — anyone making a time-sensitive trading or hedging decision needs a real-time market data source instead, not a daily reference rate.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool send my data anywhere?
The amount you type and the currencies you pick never leave your browser — the conversion math itself runs entirely on your device. The one thing this tool does that the rest of this site's tools do not is fetch a public exchange-rate table from a third-party API (frankfurter.app, sourced from the European Central Bank) so the numbers stay current. That is a generic, non-personal lookup — the same rates everyone using the tool gets back — not a transmission of anything you entered.
How current are these exchange rates?
Rates update once per business day, sourced from the European Central Bank's daily reference rates — they are not a live, tick-by-tick feed the way a trading terminal shows. That makes this tool useful for budgeting, invoicing or getting a quick sense of value, but not suitable for time-sensitive trading decisions where a fraction of a percent of intraday movement matters.
Which currencies are supported?
Major world currencies published in the European Central Bank's daily reference rates — around 30 in total, including the US dollar, euro, pound, yen and most other widely traded currencies. Smaller or less commonly traded currencies may not be covered; this tool is accurate about that rather than claiming universal coverage it does not have.
Why does my bank or card charge a different rate than what's shown here?
This tool shows the mid-market rate — the raw midpoint between buy and sell prices on the wholesale currency market, with no markup added. Banks, card networks and currency-exchange counters add their own margin on top of that rate, typically anywhere from around 1% to several percent, which is how they profit on the exchange. So this is the honest reference point, not necessarily the number that will appear on your statement.
Can I use this offline?
The conversion calculation itself is simple arithmetic that could run anywhere, but it needs at least one successful network fetch of the day's rates first. If that fetch fails — no connection, or the rate service is down — this tool shows a clear error instead of a silently wrong or frozen result.
