Lorem Ipsum text derives from a passage of Cicero's 45 BC philosophical work De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, scrambled and rearranged in ways that strip it of coherent meaning while keeping recognisably Latin-looking words. Typesetters adopted a version of this passage as filler text as far back as the 1500s, and it has remained the default ever since for a specific structural reason: its word lengths, letter frequencies and sentence rhythm resemble genuine prose closely enough that a layout filled with it looks the way it will look once real content arrives, without anyone reading the words and getting distracted by their meaning.

That last property is the actual point. Placeholder text exists to test a layout's behaviour — how a paragraph wraps, whether a card overflows at a given width, how a heading breaks across two lines — and any text that reads as meaningful competes for the viewer's attention with the thing actually being tested, which is the arrangement of space, not the words in it.

Precisely because Lorem Ipsum is instantly recognisable as placeholder, nobody mistakes it for real content and nobody accidentally ships it to production believing it says something meaningful — a real risk with filler text that reads as plausible English, which can slip past a distracted reviewer looking at layout rather than copy. This is the practical argument for preferring the Latin-derived filler over an English alternative in most cases: the moment placeholder text looks like it could be real, it becomes a liability rather than a convenience.

The trade-off is that a client or stakeholder unfamiliar with design conventions occasionally reacts to a mockup full of Latin with confusion rather than recognition, which is the one situation where switching to plain English filler is worth the small added risk of it being mistaken for real copy.

Typing a single repeated word — "test test test test" — as a quick substitute for real placeholder text is a common shortcut, and it actively misleads whoever is reviewing the layout. Every word is identical in length, so every line breaks at the same predictable interval, which hides exactly the layout problems placeholder text is supposed to reveal: how a heading behaves when a genuinely long word appears, whether a card handles a paragraph of realistically uneven line lengths, where natural line breaks actually fall. Text with the natural variation in word length that real prose has is what makes those behaviours visible before real content exists to expose them.

Keeping the traditional "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" opening by default is deliberate rather than incidental: it is the single most recognisable placeholder phrase in design and publishing, and starting with it signals unambiguously to anyone glancing at a mockup that the content is filler rather than a draft of real copy. Turning that off in favour of a randomised starting point is occasionally useful for generating several visually distinct blocks of filler within one mockup, where an identical opening on every block would look repetitive across, say, several card components on the same page.
