Weight Converter
A preset of Unit Converter
Convert between grams, kilograms, tonnes, ounces, pounds and stones. Uses the exact international pound of 0.45359237 kg, so results agree with official conversions rather than drifting by a fraction.

Why the stone survives as a unit almost nowhere else
The stone, equal to 14 pounds, remains in everyday conversational use for body weight specifically in the UK and Ireland long after most other imperial weight units faded from common use there, which makes it a source of genuine confusion for anyone converting a UK-quoted body weight into kilograms or pounds without realising the stone is a distinct unit rather than a colloquial rounding of pounds. Using the exact internationally defined pound as the base conversion factor throughout means the stone conversion here — and every other weight conversion alongside it — stays consistent and precise rather than accumulating rounding error across whichever chain of units a given conversion happens to pass through.
Where weight-unit mixing shows up in ordinary life
International recipes mixing grams with ounces or pounds, airline luggage allowances specified in kilograms while a traveller thinks in pounds, and body-weight discussions crossing between kilograms, pounds and stones depending on which country the conversation is happening in are all everyday situations where the same physical weight needs to move fluidly between units without accumulating error — and where a converter using the exact defined pound, rather than a rounded approximation, actually matters for anything beyond a rough back-of-envelope estimate that nobody will ever bother double-checking against an official source.
Frequently asked questions
Are these conversion factors exact?
Yes, where an exact definition exists. An inch is defined as exactly 25.4 mm and a pound as exactly 0.45359237 kg by international agreement, and those exact values are used here rather than the rounded ones many converters carry.
Why is temperature handled differently?
Because Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points, so conversion needs an offset as well as a factor — 0°C is 32°F, not 0°F. Everything else in this tool scales linearly through a single base unit.
Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?
No, and the difference is large: a UK imperial gallon is about 4.546 litres against the US gallon's 3.785 — roughly 20% bigger. Both are listed separately, as are US and imperial pints and fluid ounces.
Are KB and KiB the same?
No. This tool uses the decimal SI definitions, where 1 KB is 1,000 bytes — the convention storage manufacturers and network speeds use. Operating systems often report the binary values (1 KiB = 1,024 bytes), which is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GB.
