Add Watermark to PDF

A text watermark added this way is drawn directly onto each page as ordinary page content, positioned and styled like any other text on the document — which means it is visible to every viewer and printer exactly the same way the rest of the page is, but it also means it carries no special protection beyond being visible. Anyone opening the file in a capable PDF editor can select and delete that text the same way they could edit any other element on the page. A watermark is a label stating the document's status — draft, confidential, for-review — read by a human looking at the page, not a technical control that prevents copying, printing or redistribution.

This distinction matters because the two are sometimes conflated: a document genuinely needing access control — encryption, a password, restricted permissions — needs a different mechanism entirely, and a watermark should not be mistaken for one. What it is good at is exactly what it looks like it is good at: making sure nobody mistakes a work-in-progress draft for the approved final version, or a sensitive internal copy for a public one, at the moment someone is looking at the page.

A watermark exists in tension with the content underneath it — visible enough to notice immediately, but not so opaque that it interferes with reading the actual document. Somewhere around 20–25% opacity is the balance point for most uses: clearly present at a glance across the page, while dense body text underneath stays comfortably legible through it. Pushing much past 50% starts to genuinely compete with the page content for attention, which is rarely the intent.

A diagonal angle, typically 45 degrees, is the conventional choice because it crosses the natural horizontal flow of most text rather than running parallel to a line of it, which makes the watermark read as clearly separate from the document's own content rather than looking like it belongs to a specific line or heading. A horizontal watermark placed at the top or bottom of the page reads more like a heading or footer and is easier to overlook amid genuine document structure.

Plenty of free PDF utilities stamp their own name or logo onto every page you process, and remove it only if you pay — a watermark added to advertise the tool rather than to serve the document's owner. The only text that appears on the output here is the text typed into the watermark field; nothing is added on the tool's own behalf, and there is no paid tier that removes something that was never inserted in the first place.
