Where percentage-increase calculations show up most often
A salary review comparing this year's figure against last year's, a business tracking revenue growth quarter over quarter, or a shopper comparing a listed price against what an item cost previously are all asking the identical underlying question — how big is the change, expressed as a proportion of the value it started from — even though the numbers and context differ completely each time. The formula is the same regardless: divide the difference between the two values by the original value, then express that as a percentage, which is exactly what this mode computes and shows the working for, with the actual entered numbers substituted directly into the formula so the arithmetic can be double-checked at a glance.
Why a decrease is simply a negative increase
There is no need for a separate "percentage decrease" mode alongside this one, because a decrease is mathematically the identical formula applied to a new value smaller than the original — the result comes out negative rather than needing a different calculation entirely. Entering a new value below the original one here produces the percentage decrease automatically, with the negative sign making the direction of the change immediately clear, and the same formula and working shown either way regardless of which direction the change happens to run.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a percentage of a number?
Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For 15% of 240: 240 × 15 ÷ 100 = 36. The "Percentage of" mode does this for you and shows the working.
What is the difference between percentage change and percentage points?
If a rate rises from 4% to 6%, that is a 2 percentage-point rise but a 50% increase. News reports mix these up constantly. Use percentage points when comparing two percentages, and percentage change when comparing two quantities.
Why is a 50% increase not cancelled by a 50% decrease?
Because each is applied to a different base. 100 increased by 50% is 150; 150 decreased by 50% is 75, not 100. To reverse a 50% increase you must decrease by 33.3%. The "Reverse percentage" mode handles this.
How do I find the original price before a discount?
Divide the discounted price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A £60 item after 25% off was £60 ÷ 0.75 = £80. Reverse percentage mode does exactly this.
