How precise the embedded location actually is
Phone GPS is typically accurate to somewhere between three and ten metres under open sky, which is precise enough to identify a specific house, apartment building or business rather than a general area. A geotagged photo taken inside or just outside your home embeds coordinates that resolve, on a map, to your front door — not to your city or your neighbourhood. This is the detail that makes the risk concrete rather than abstract: it is not that a stranger could figure out roughly where you live, it is that the coordinates say so directly and exactly.
Situations where this matters most
A few common cases where stripping GPS specifically, rather than as a side effect of some other edit, is worth doing deliberately: photos of a home interior posted to a marketplace or rental listing, photos taken at a workplace or school and shared publicly, photos of children taken at recurring locations such as a home or a regular school run, and any photo taken somewhere the poster would rather not have publicly pinned — a hospital, a private event, a location not otherwise disclosed. In every one of these the coordinate data is the specific thing being given away, independent of anything visible in the photo itself.
Frequently asked questions
What is EXIF data and why does it matter?
Metadata your camera writes into the file: the model and serial number, the exact date and time, exposure settings, and — on almost every phone — the GPS coordinates where the photo was taken. Posting an unstripped photo of your living room publishes your home address to anyone who opens the file.
Do social networks not strip this already?
The big ones usually do on upload, but you cannot rely on it: it varies by platform, by upload path and over time. Anything you email, put in cloud storage, attach to a forum post or share directly keeps its metadata entirely.
Does removing EXIF change how the image looks?
Only in one respect: the orientation flag is also metadata, so the tool bakes the rotation into the pixels before stripping it. The photo stays the right way up rather than flipping sideways once the flag is gone.
Is any quality lost?
A small amount for JPG, because the image is re-encoded — that is what removes the metadata. The default quality of 95 makes the difference invisible. PNG and WebP output stays lossless.
Is the photo uploaded to check its metadata?
No. Both the reading and the stripping happen in your browser. Sending a photo to a server to have its location data removed would rather defeat the point.
