Why a plain URL code beats a shortened redirect link on print media

A URL printed on something physical — a business card, a poster, packaging, a menu — is committed to for as long as that physical object exists, which can be years for packaging or a sign, while a shortened redirect link depends entirely on the shortening service remaining operational, free, and pointed at the right destination for that entire lifetime. Encoding the actual destination URL directly into the QR code removes that dependency completely: there is no third-party service that has to keep running, has to keep the mapping free, or could be repointed by someone other than whoever printed the code — the code contains the real address, permanently, exactly as generated.

Keeping the code scannable once it is actually printed

A very long URL — one carrying a long tracking query string, for instance — produces a visually denser QR pattern than a short, clean link to the same destination, and a denser pattern is measurably harder to scan reliably, especially at a distance or on a lower-quality print. Using the shortest genuinely necessary URL, ideally without a long tracking parameter tacked onto the end, keeps the resulting code simpler and meaningfully more forgiving to scan under real-world printing and lighting conditions, which matters more the further away or lower-quality the intended scanning environment is.

Frequently asked questions

Do these QR codes expire?

Never. The code encodes your content directly rather than pointing at a redirect service, so there is nothing that can be switched off, rate-limited or start charging later. Many "free" generators use a redirect they control — those do expire.

Can you see what I encode?

No. The code is generated entirely in your browser and nothing is transmitted. That matters most for WiFi codes, which contain your network password in plain text.

What does error correction level do?

It adds redundancy so the code still scans when partly damaged or obscured. Level L tolerates about 7% damage and produces the smallest code; level H tolerates 30% and is what you need if you plan to place a logo over the centre.

Should I download PNG or SVG?

PNG for screens, documents and anything at a fixed size. SVG is vector, so it stays perfectly sharp at any scale — use it for print, posters, signage and vinyl.

How small can a QR code be printed?

As a rule of thumb the code should be at least a tenth of the scanning distance: 2 cm for a code scanned at 20 cm, 10 cm for one scanned across a room. Shorter content produces a simpler pattern that scans from further away.
